Bernie - My Bestfriend

story told by son Mark Peters

I would first like to say that my father, Bernie was my best friend. He was 57 years old. He worked 30+ years at the Irving Paper mill in Saint John, NB, where he retired in Sept/05. He was diagnosed with throat cancer shortly after his retirement in which he battled for approx. 2 years and lost the fight this past July 23/07.

He first went through vigorous radiation treatments and chemo-therapy. He was a very caring father who didn’t want anyone to be saddened by his misfortunes. Dad was always happy and smiling knowing that he had a wonderful, caring family. He raised us 3 children and gave us everything which he never had when he was a young boy. He had 6 wonderful grand children ageing 1 month to 12 yrs old. He had a wonderful caring wife and mother, Bonnie who took great caring of him through the thick and thin.

My dad always enjoyed puttering around the yard or going out into the woods and cutting down trees on his time off from the mill. He was always enjoying life. He always loved spending time and playing with his grand children. When we were young, dad was always there to support us in all of our sports that we were heavily involved with. He also was a Little League Baseball Umpire. Dad could always be there to talk to if there was anything that was of concern. He is sadly missed by his wife, sons, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. Someday we will be together again dad, I miss you and think of you everyday, you were my best friend.
