Saunders Secondary - Sending hundreds of kids to camp
![]() |
In the month of April, Saunders Secondary School in London, Ontario is a very special place to be. It is a special place to be for two reasons…the enthusiasm and commitment of its staff and students to make a difference. Every April, the staff and students of Saunders give of their time and their energy to run an incredible Cancer |
Campaign. Their goal is to raise as much money as possible for the Canadian Cancer Society through an unbelievable variety of fun activities and events while raising awareness about cancer-related issues. Some of the activities have included fashion shows, silent auctions, a cut-a-thon where local hairstylists donate their time to cut and style hair for a donation, bakesales, student-teacher games, car washes, pie-in-the-face, oil changes, garage sales, foosball tournaments and they even raffle off a brand new car! All run by the staff and students and all to help make a difference in the fight against cancer. Over the past 6 years alone, these activities have raised almost $250,000.00, including a whopping $61,000.00 in 2004. The past two years, Saunders raised $53,000.00 and $55,000.00 respectively and designated these funds to Camp Trillium, through the Canadian Cancer Society. As a result of their fundraising efforts the last two years, 181 kids were able to attend Camp Trillium for one week. This year, Saunders is once again aiming to send as many kids as possible to Camp Trillium and has set its sights on surpassing the $50,000.00 mark for the fourth straight year. Judging by the 100-plus students and staff on the Cancer Campaign organizing committee, they are well on their way to making a difference once again. Saunders is also incredibly proud of the efforts of Typically Canadian and is especially proud of the fact that Andrew Hopkins, TJ Fantin and both Kyle and Evan Braatz are all graduates of Saunders Secondary School and were contributing members of the Saunders Cancer Campaign during their time in high school. They are carrying on the torch of making a difference far past Saunders and truly are making a difference as typical Canadians. Unbelievable! The Typically Canadian Group is riding with students, staff and alumni of Saunders Secondary School.... Who are you riding with?
